Let’s have a look at the free mobile application for both iPhone and Android, and that is Photoshop Fix app. Using this app, you can take the pictures by your smartphone, for example, on the beach and edit it right there. It is free, and the only thing you have to do is to sign up to Adobe and get your Adobe ID.
Here are the main features:
- Photoshop Fix is for FREE
- It is perfect for detailed portrait retouching on your smartphone
- Complex retouching functions available like Liquify, Smooth, Paint, Defocus
- Photoshop Fix has excellent integration with other Adobe apps and software
Integration with Adobe Lightroom Mobile
First, let’s speak about the integration with another mobile app from Adobe which is Adobe Lightroom Mobile. So if you are in Lightroom mobile just tap the sharing icon on the top-right menu. Then choose Edit in. Now you have the option to select Small or Maximum image size.
After that, there are two possibilities you can choose from: Healing in Photoshop Fix or Liquify in Photoshop Fix.
If I want to use all the capabilities of Photoshop Fix, I could simply open the image right in this Photoshop app. But this option from Lightroom mobile gives me a perfect feature of going back and forth between lightroom mobile and Photoshop Fix app.
So Let’s Say I want to heal the photo. After I tap this option, I’ll be redirected right to the Healing feature of Photoshop Fix app. Here I can choose the brush size, use clone stamp tool, patch tool, red-eye correction.
Photoshop Fix - Zoom and Edit the details
So I’ll start on one side of the image, zoom in, and using spot healing brush remove unwanted object or person. Just paint with your finger on the object of the image, and the object will be removed and substituted with the surrounding background.
Remove objects one by one
If there are more objects or people you want to get rid of, do it partially. So don’t remove it by painting everything by one brushstroke at once but remove one object, then the other one, and so on. You’ll get better results that way.
If you’re finished with one part of the image, use two fingers to move the image to the new position stayed zoomed. Be careful if you are editing a beach photo or image with any reflections, and don’t forget to remove the reflections too.
Healing brush, patch tool
Sometimes you won’t be satisfied with the healing brush, and in that case, you can immediately switch over to the patch tool. Photoshop Fix will even remember the last selection, and you can simply by dragging find the appropriate image area that should be used by the patch tool.
When we are finished, we can save the edited work and return to Lightroom Mobile, where we started as you remember. Now you can see both versions of the image right next to each other - the original as well as the edited version.
Adjust in Photoshop Fix
Adjust Submenu contains standard editing tools that re very common in all Adobe apps.
Each tool has a nice editing slider at the bottom of the screen so you can easily adjust any of the parameters in this Photoshop app.
So the standard tools are Exposure, Contrast, Warmth, Saturation, Shadows, and Highlights.
Liquify in Photoshop Fix
Standard Photoshop users know the liquify tool very well, I suppose. But this app has a superb extension, and that is the face recognition and editing options using the liquify tool.
Once the face or more faces are detected on the image, you can tap on the face, and you’ll see more points defining most recognizable characteristics on the face like nose, lips, eyes, chin jaws, chin, forehead and so on.
Just click on one of these points, and another submenu will appear.
So for example if I tap on the eyes point I’ll get the option to edit the distance between the eyes, size of the eyes, tilt, height, and width.
This way, you can make very precise and detailed adjustments to the selected face part. Besides that, you have, of course, the standard tool available like Warp, Swell, Twirl.
This group of tools solves the issues with mainly the face skin when we are editing portraits but is usable on any image where we need to smooth out any part of the picture.
Here we have the Face button that makes an auto-smoothing process of the skin. Afterward, if you need to smooth out any part manually, you always can do so.
On the opposite side, there are still parts of the image that have to be sharpened. Eyes are the best example.
So go ahead and zoom in the image and with the sharpen tool selected paint over the areas (eyes, eyebrows, hair parts) with the sharpen tool.
Adjust the opacity to achieve more subtle results
To obtain a more subtle effect, try to adjust the opacity of the brush. For more subtle sharpening, tap the opacity button on the left side under the brush icon.
Then by keeping your finger on the screen just move down to decrease the opacity of the effect brush - in this case, the opacity of sharpening brush.
If you accidentally overdo any brushstroke, you can always use restore tool to restore your last action
The Light submenu allows you to lighten or darken any part of the image.
First of all, I would mention the Structure option. This is an automatic enhancement allowing you by tapping this button to emphasize the structure and contrast of the image.
I would be careful here, especially in the case of portrait shots of women as it is emphasizing all little wrinkles on the face and skin. The best way is to try it and if you are not satisfied, just click the Undo button to get back by one step.
To lighten any part of the image, choose the Lighten tool, and set the brush size, hardness, and opacity. Then paint with your finger over the part of the image that should need the lighting.
The same process you use for the darkening, just select the Darken tool first. Again we can use Restore tool for paint away the overdone strokes of lightening or darkening.
Sometimes you need to increase Saturation of the colors. Here we can use Color submenu. It contains Saturate and Desaturate tools.
Again we have an automatic option called Pop. If you tap the Pop button, the whole image gets more saturated, and the colors became more present.
If you tap more than once, the effect will be increasing more and more. Again if you feel it is too much, just tap the undo button on the top of the screen.
For manual fine-enhancement of the saturation, use the Saturate button. Set the brush size, the hardness, and the opacity for a more or less subtle effect.
Then paint over the image parts that you want to be more colored or saturated. Desaturation is the same process, use the Desaturate button.
You can get back by one last step using the Restore button and painting over the selected area.
When you shoot portraits and want to make a really detailed image editing right inside the smartphone using photoshop Fix, you could find helpful to make the color correction on the face skin using the Paint submenu.
Here you set the brush size, hardness, but also the opacity and the color. Let’s say we would like to paint in skin color to a specific face part, like the makeup.
Let’s select the color picker and tap on the source color. Then paint with low opacity. Turn the Blend option button on to achieve a natural look with a smooth transition. Use the Restore button to fix any mistakes.
Artistic defocusing is a method when you lead the attention of an image viewer to the specific part of the image.
You can get this effect by using high-quality lenses with shallow depth of field, or you can make it also in postprocessing.
Photoshop Fix allows you to do so. Select the Defocus submenu and set the brush size, hardness, and opacity.
Then paint over the area you want to be blurred or defocused. You can correct any mistakes by selecting the Restore tool a restore the last step as it is common for all other tools in Photoshop Fix.
Vignette in Photoshop Fix.
Vignetting is another method to grab the viewer’s attention to a specific part of your photograph. It is used to lead the eyes to the center of the image most often. Use the Vignette submenu.
Then choose the color of the vignette. I’m using almost every time the black one, which is also the default settings here.
By Radius, you define the radius of the vignetting, and Feather determines ho smooth will be the gradient between the black borders and the image center.
The Shape option enables you to define if the shape of the vignette will be rounded or more rectangular.
Sharing options of Photoshop Fix app.
Photoshop Fix has an excellent set of sharing options. You can simply save the edited final image to the Camera Roll on your iPhone. You can even send the image to Photoshop CC or save it to Lightroom. Also, you can save the image to your CC library. There are directly the possibilities to share the image directly on Instagram or Facebook or save it to Adobe Stock.
Finally, you have the classic sharing options of your smartphone available too.
It is always better to use a larger screen with even a pen if possible. The advantage of Photoshop Fix is you can run it also on a tablet or iPad using the pen. Here you can achieve even more precise results.
Overall it is a perfect app from the Adobe apps family with super integration with other applications.
Photoshop Fix brings you the high-end functionality, especially for retouching the portraits directly on your mobile phone.
